Reflecting on the Journey: From Then to Now

In life, we often find ourselves at crossroads, looking back at where we've been and contemplating where we're going. This reflection can be especially powerful when we consider our mental health journey. In this blog post, we will explore a personal story of transformation, the challenges faced, and the hope that comes from recognizing our growth over time.
Understanding the Journey
Every individual has a unique story, filled with ups and downs. My name is Jasper Williams III, and my journey includes being a son, brother, and a pastor's kid. I graduated from Woodward Academy and earned a BA from the University of Georgia, followed by a master's in theology with a concentration in Urban Ministry from Dallas Theological Seminary. Today, I serve as a vice pastor, church planner, and mental health care advocate. However, my life has not been without its challenges, including battles with depression, anxiety, intermittent explosive disorder, and bipolar II disorder.
This week, I found myself reflecting on my past, particularly on experiences from five years ago. It was a time when I was preparing for inpatient treatment in Seattle, and the memories are both vivid and poignant. I discovered some old photographs that my wife had sent me, which prompted a deeper introspection about my journey.
Where Were You Five Years Ago?
As we approach the end of the year, many people take time to reflect on their goals and achievements. I encourage you to think back to where you were five years ago. Were you in a better place or a more challenging one? For me, the contrast is stark. Five years ago, I was struggling significantly, while today I feel a sense of progress and hope.
When I think back to December 2019, I remember the struggles I faced. I was preparing for a significant life change, transitioning away from traditional ministry, which was bittersweet. The fear of losing connection with my congregation loomed large, and I was uncertain about the future. Yet, that transition has allowed me to explore new avenues of ministry, reaching more people than I could have imagined.
Visualizing Change: Then and Now
One powerful way to gauge our growth is through visual reminders. I recently shared some photos from December 2019, showing the person I was then compared to the person I am today. In those photos, my face reflects the struggles I faced—an attempt at a smile that masked deeper issues. Now, when I look in the mirror, I see a person who has worked hard to overcome those challenges.
Consider your own visual reminders. What do your photos say about your journey? Are they a testament to your struggles or a celebration of your achievements? The process of looking back can be both painful and enlightening, offering insight into how far we've come.
The Importance of Reflection
Reflection is a critical aspect of personal growth. It allows us to assess our experiences, identify patterns, and understand our emotional responses. As I reflect on my past, I recognize the importance of acknowledging both the struggles and the triumphs. It's essential to be grateful for the progress made while also recognizing the challenges that shaped us.
For some, reflecting on the past may evoke feelings of sadness or regret. It’s vital to process these emotions and understand that they can coexist with gratitude. I often feel sadness for the person I was five years ago, who struggled with mental health issues. However, I also feel immense gratitude for the growth and transformation I have experienced since then.
Setting Goals for the Future
As we approach the new year, it's a perfect time to set intentions and goals. Reflecting on where we’ve been can inspire us to chart a course for where we want to go. Personally, I plan to set specific goals for 2025, focusing on my mental health and ministry endeavors. Having clear objectives can help steer our journey and provide motivation to continue moving forward.
What goals do you want to set for yourself? Whether they are related to mental health, personal growth, or professional aspirations, identifying and articulating them can be a powerful step towards achieving them.
Understanding Personal Identity
One of the key themes in my reflection is the importance of personal identity. Throughout our lives, we encounter various labels and identifiers based on our roles and experiences. It's crucial not to allow these labels to define us permanently. For instance, I often encounter people who remember me as the “vice pastor” or from different phases of my life. While these titles hold significance, they do not encompass my entire journey.
It's essential to recognize that we are not static beings. We are constantly evolving, and our past does not have to dictate our future. Embracing change and allowing ourselves the grace to grow is a vital aspect of mental health.
Living in the Present
As we reflect on our journeys, it's important to remember that life is a continuous process. Each moment is an opportunity for growth and transformation. The narrative of our lives is not fixed; it changes as we do. We must give ourselves permission to be where we are while striving for improvement.
As we approach the holiday season, I encourage you to take time for reflection. Consider where you were five years ago and how far you’ve come. Embrace the progress you've made, and don’t hesitate to set new goals for the future.
Concluding Thoughts
In closing, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May this season of reflection bring you clarity and joy as you look back on your journey. Remember, life is a movie, and each day is a new scene. Embrace the changes, celebrate the victories, and continue to pursue a life filled with purpose and passion.
Thank you for joining me on this reflective journey. I look forward to connecting again in the new year as we continue to explore the complexities of mental health and personal growth.
